“We’re not just a public-safety agency. We’re very much a data-sharing agency.”
One takeaway from my investigation into ICE’s investigators for The New York Times Magazine is how states that offer driver’s licenses to undocumented people—now more than a dozen of them, including Washington State—may also be handing a roadmap to ICE.
That DMV’s sell your information to data brokers is not news. (See, for example, this recent story from Vice.) But these documents, acquired in a public-records request to the Washington Department of Licensing, still stunned me. Washington makes almost $30 million a year selling residents’ data, and the information flows to some 35,000 private data brokers.
